Butterfly Chairs – Replacement Covers

June 23, 2011 by Bob Borson 33 Comments

A few weeks ago I undertook a project to restore old butterfly chairs I had “acquired” in an effort to make them a bit more presentable. The final piece of the process was to replace the white canvas slipcovers with something better. I had tried washing them with my own home brew of oxyclean, bleach, Febreeze, curse words and drop kicks but no matter what I did, they looked like a active petri dish for some school of horrors science project. I knew that anyone who was willing to sit in those canvas covers was either drunk or was thinking “is this going to eat through my pants?” the entire time.

After conducting the type of research I am famous for, I concluded that the Indoor/Outdoor vinyl weave covers from Circa50 were the way to go. I am pretty sure the amount of detergent and drop kick energy I used to try and clean my canvas covers is a fraction of the cost of these vinyl covers (which retail at $55 each). So there you have it – right? Wrong. About a week after I wrote that post, I get an email from Circa50 Owner Steve Dunning saying he would like to help finish the job and send me some new sling covers – what an awesome thing for me!

I’ve received the new vinyl weave covers (took about 3 weeks) and I must say they are even nicer than I anticipated. They obviously look great, but they have this little bit of give to the mesh that makes them very comfortable to sit in. The mesh also allows air to move through the cover and as a result, the back of your shirt doesn’t get all sweaty – making you look like a sweathog when you stand up … although once I had a sweat pattern that looked like Thom Yorke from Radiohead so that was sorta cool.

Another reason I am happy to praise these covers is that since I put them on my butterfly chair frames, they have sat out in the yard and we have been getting clobbered with rain and still somehow manage to have the temperature climb into triple digits during the day (Texas summers kinda suck). I have gone out to check on the covers and they look perfect. If you have butterfly chairs and need (or want) new covers, call Steve up at Circa50 and get these vinyl weave slips – you won’t regret it.

… they are dog approved for style and comfort. Now I just have to get two more chairs and two more covers and my family won’t have to draw straws to see who gets to sit where. At least I know where I’m getting them.

Cheers
