heard around the architectural studio #005

September 6, 2013 by Bob Borson Leave a Comment

While a necessity, I don’t have to like talking to structural engineers. I’m 100% certain that one of the very first courses you take in college if you want to become a structural engineer, is titled “Telling the Architect – You Can’t Do That”

Engineer: Do you know how far this is spanning?

Blob: Yes, I’m the one who drew it.

Engineer: That’s pretty far.

Blob: Yes, I’m aware. That’s why you’re here, to tell me what I need structurally so that I can span this distance.

Engineer: If you put a column in the middle it would be easier.

Blob ….. I want to stop talking to you now.

All I can say is that I could have a hundred of these conversation with the same engineer … they never change.
