Today, Andrew and I are going to be talking about why becoming an architect takes a long time, that this process involves doing a lot of different things, and how “stupid” questions play an important role in the education process of everyone in this profession. Just to get this out of the way, I am admitting here and now that I ask stupid questions all the time – maybe not as often as I used to, but they’re still there.

Knowing what you know now, if you could go back and relive your college days, would you do it?
There were a few restrictors to this question – mostly that you weren’t simply reliving what you’ve already done, and the other main consideration was that you were time jumping … meaning you were taking what you know now, going back into your body during your school days, and once you were done with school, you jump right back to exactly where you are right now. While that might not seem fair (where’s the benefit of all this extra knowledge that you’ve leveraged into a better career??) this question had more to do with the college experience rather than changing your future.

Internships and early roles aren’t tests of how much you already know, but necessary opportunities to build the skills you still need … and that starts by asking questions, even when they feel uncomfortable. Gaining fluency in architecture takes time, typically years, and the architects who grow the most are those who remain curious and engaged throughout the process. In a profession this complex, no one has all the answers – and those who succeed are the ones who know when to speak up, when to listen, and when to ask the question everyone else is afraid to voice.
